That is why it has been sajd that you cannot watch your own 33 burial. Once you dissolve, once your particular expectations dissolve, that is liberation, freedom, enlightenment. So we cannot congratulate ourselves on becoming the first buddha of the age or the first buddha of New York. In the hinayana, the entire discipline is based on trying to get out of samsara, samsara from top to bottom, bottom as the realm of hell and top as the realm of the gods-or God, for that matter. We should probably use the singular God at this point, judging from the background and history of the audience.

Basically it is the journeyer: our mind reflects a particular style of working with ourselves, which is the vehicle. 24 And we have reflections as to what kind of situations we are getting into, which is the path or the road or the street or the highway. Because of those necessary situations, the Buddha very cleverly instituted some traditions that would make students understand and would create some kind of first breakthrough from that hierarchical process. In a way he instituted a bureaucracy designed to break down the levels of unnecessary bureaucracy.

It is exemplified by Mr. Christmas Humphreys of England. He is a complete example of that type of person. He used to be threatened by the Tibetan buddhists who came to the United Kingdom. He did not know what to make of them. And he did not want to publicize their existence in the M£ddle Way Journal, which he controlled. He had to be talked to and reassured: "Everything is okay. We are doing everything right. " Then he was very happy and he decided to put things into his journal. So he was lost for a moment because of his confusion, not knowing how to get security from his own thinking, which was very highly confused.
